I honestly don’t see what the big deal is with Elena’s “choice” and why people think that Elena doesn’t deserve Damon or why they think that DE’s buildup has been ruined this finale or that it all came to nothing. This wasn’t at all the case.

It was not like Elena rejected Damon, because she didn’t- not by a long shot. In fact, she admitted to Damon for the first time this entire series that she had feelings for him: “No matter what I feel for you, I never un-fell for him.” She put her feelings for Damon on the same level as her feelings for Stefan. The only thing we should understand from this “choice” was that Elena hasn’t let go of Stefan yet. We did not lose our buildup, nor was DE destroyed at all.

Even more, it was Damon this time who said, “It will always be Stefan”, not Elena. And the best part of it is that Elena did not agree with that statement like she did in 2x01. She said, “I can’t think about always, all I can think about is right now.” Damon is always. His love is for always and Elena was rushed into this decision by the circumstances outside her control. She didn’t have time to think about “always”, but right now it was Stefan. Does that discount her love for Damon? Not at all. This is their journey.

“And I care about you, Damon, which is why I have to let you go.” Guys, this ultimately was Elena’s “Rose” scene. In 2x08, we had Damon be selfless and let Elena go. Here, in 3x22, we had Elena be selfless and free Damon. She didn’t want to let him go. Not after her touching speech she gave to Damon and Stefan in 3x21 about how if she chose one, she would lose the other. She couldn’t bear the thought of losing one of them. Letting Damon go crushed Elena, just as Damon telling Elena he couldn’t be selfish with her crushed him. She wants Damon to stay in her life, but she did not want to be unfair to him because of her unresolved feelings for Stefan. And we don’t want Elena to choose Damon until she is ready to give herself to him fully and completely without looking back. She and Stefan did not get their proper closure; they were torn away from each other and now that he’s back in her life, it’s only fair for them to have another try… but we all know where it is ultimately going to lead.

And our time is coming. Damon and Elena are stronger than ever. Their buildup was not destroyed; this was just a “bump in the road”. The beauty of it is that not only did we get the fantastic flashback of DEstiny coming together for the first time, but it was the thought of Damon’s first meeting with Elena that gave him the will to keep fighting. To pick himself up and fight. That is our Damon and that is Elena’s Damon. When it’s real, you can’t walk away, and Damon flew back to Mystic Falls at the first sign that the girl he loved was dead. She had just broke his heart and “let him go” and he still came back- no hesitation. Damon doesn’t want to be anywhere else but at Elena’s side; whether it be as a stranger, acquaintance or friend, as far as Damon Salvatore is concerned, his home and his place will always be Elena. They fight and they keep fighting and in the end, they always survive.

Here, Stefan is basically saying that he can’t be with Elena if she loves someone else. When he said this, I couldn’t help thinking of how Damon has been willing to be with Elena no matter if she has feelings for five thousand someone elses (aka Stefan). In 3x10 he kissed her, knowing full well that she was still in love with Stefan, and in 3x11 his “It’s right. Just not right now” shows that he’ll always be waiting for her, and that he’ll start a relationship with her whenever she’s ready, even if she still has feelings for Stefan.

That’s the difference between Stefan and Damon. Damon will love her unconditionally, while Stefan can’t handle being in a relationship with her if he knows she’s not entirely his. For Damon, even having a tiny piece of Elena would be enough. More than enough. That’s what’s so beautiful about the way Damon loves. He gives everything he has, every bit of himself—and then some—for even the slightest sliver of someone in return. His love is selfless; he gives, so much, without caring how much he receives, without taking or asking for anything at all. He knew that Katherine loved Stefan when he was with her in 1864, and of course he knew that she was sleeping with the both of them, but he didn’t care if he had to share her feelings and her attention—all that mattered was that he had a part of her.

It wasn’t the same for Stefan. He said it himself to Katherine: “I want you all to myself.” Just having a little bit of her wasn’t enough for him; he couldn’t stand not having her love wholly and solely for himself, and he’s the same way with Elena now. For Damon, it never matters if the women he loves love other people too, as long as they love him or even just care for him.

That’s one of the things I see as proof that when Damon loves, he loves so much more than his brother does. And this is also proven by the fact that Stefan freaked out when he discovered Katherine was a vampire and didn’t want anything to do with her, couldn’t see the person he had been in love with, and Katherine had to compel him to keep him with her—but Damon didn’t care when he found out and still saw the woman he loved underneath the vampire, even though this was a boy who was raised to believe that all vampires are demons and can’t be trusted. He stripped away his beliefs, tossed aside the prejudices and hatred for vampires that his father had been drilling into him because his love was so strong. It’s always so strong.

Stefan’squote at the beginning of this post also shows that Stefan thinks what he’s been going through for Elena—getting over his blood binge, making himself feel everything again, forgetting about his desire for revenge against Klaus—is a lot. But Damon has done so much more. Damon changed the entire personality he had constructed for himself (the Damon that was introduced to us in season one) for Elena, has fought against himself to find his humanity again for her—and it wasn’t even for a chance to be in a relationship with her, but for the chance to be her friend, for her to see him as a person. Damon went through so much more for three seasons just to develop a bond with Elena, not caring that (in his eyes) he probably has no chance to be with Elena in the way he wants.

He turned everything he knew upside down and changed who he was even though it seemed that being with Elena would never happen, even though it would probably be to no avail, because he loved her that much. Stefan didn’t go through as much and he knew he always had a chance with Elena, unlike Damon who did the things he did even though he knew it was most likely all for nothing. It isn’t fair for Damon, who does just as much—more—than Stefan for nothing, for no chances with Elena, but it also shows how beautiful and overwhelming and endless his love is.

When Damon Salvatore loves someone, he loves more strongly and passionately and fiercely and unconditionally and selflessly with more of himself and just more than anyone else has ever loved and ever will love. And that by itself is one of the things that makes his character—and this show—so breathtakingly beautiful.

Delena is not about love. Delena is about the journey that these two amazing characters called Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert are going through. It’s about hate and fear, taking risks and doing impulsive things. It’s about mistakes and regrets, jealousy and pain. It’s about being reckless, doing the wrong things in the wrong time, getting hurt and sacrificing. But when you overcome all of those things you find something that is much more beautiful. You find friendship and bond, trust and lust, attraction, passion, compassion, and above all, understanding. They save each other, the care about each other, they change each other. They make each other smile and laugh, they are comfortable with each other. In the hardest times, they support each other. They are there for each other, always looking out for each other. They are willing to die for each other. They overcome all the obstacles and find their way to each other. And all of that, together, is love. All of that, together, is Delena. Love is Delena. Delena is love.
